So you've booked your wedding, set a date for your engagement session, got on Pinterest and immediately become overwhelmed!
I am going to share some of my engagement session tips, tricks, and websites where you can find reasonably priced on trend engagement wear! This post will help you decide what to wear and how to prep for your engagement session, along with tips & tricks to look camera-ready!
1. Be comfortable and confident!
First and foremost, make sure that the pieces you wear make you feel comfortable and confident. If your clothes feel too loose or too tight, are hard to move in, or make you self-conscious…throw them back in the closet for another day! The better you FEEL at your engagement session, the better you will look in photos! Be sure to choose pieces that match your authentic style.
2. Coordinate but don’t get matchy-matchy:
This is the main tip affecting the outcome and feel of your images! When choosing outfits, try your best to avoid matching colors identically. Instead of sporting the good ol’ "white top and jeans combo", try mixing it up with colors that compliment each other! If you’re planning on wearing a vivid colored dress, your man would look amazing in a solid-colored button up or polo in a complimenting color! (Extra Tip! Deep jewel tone colors always photograph beautifully! sapphire blue, emerald green, ruby red, mustard yellow, burgundy, etc…they always “pop” in photos!!)
3. Don't overdo the patterns:
If you are wearing a loud pattern have your fiancé wear solids, tweeds, or thatched clothing. Larger patterns can be overwhelming and take attention away from the couple. The less "busy" the outfit, the more attention is focus on the connection between the both of you!
4. Bring Variety:
I always advise my couples to bring 2-3 outfits. One “dressy” outfit (this varies per couple! Some love a casual dress with flats, and some go all-out with a suit and gown!), one casual outfit (sweaters with jeans - an every day look) and one additional outfit of their choice! This way, you have more diversity in your images and different options to choose from for your save the dates!
5. Consider Professional Hair & Makeup:
Having professional hair & makeup done for your engagement session will make you feel like a million bucks - but that’s not the only reason it’s important! I suggest this tip to ALL of my clients, because professional hair & makeup artists know EXACTLY how to do your makeup so that you are camera-ready without a flaw! It’s a great time to contact the artist that you will be using on your wedding day and see if they offer “trial-runs” to test everything out before the big day! If this isn’t in the budget, plan to wear your makeup slightly heavier than normal & make sure to add lip color!
6. Bring your Furry Friends!!
I have A LOT of my couples ask me if it’s okay to bring along their dog (or other pet!) to their engagement session and the answer is always “YES!” I absolutely love when my clients bring along their fur babies , because it makes their photos THAT much more important, unique, and authentic to them! If your furry friend is a part of the family they are always MORE than welcome to join us!!
7. Add Layers + Jewelry!
When it comes to your engagement photos, don’t be afraid to accessorize! Adding layers like cardigans, sweaters, scarves, jackets and even hats or gloves add depth and unique details to your outfit! Throw on a watch or a stack of bangles, and give yourself a mani to add even more pretty details!
